Marshall Fletcher McCallie, Keynote Speaker
Ambassador Marshall McCallie (retired) served twenty-eight years as a career diplomat in the United States Foreign Service. He is a specialist in Africa and was appointed ambassador to the Republic of Namibia in 1993. McCallie served as Deputy Chief of Mission in South Africa and in Zambia, and Political Officer in Zaire (now Republic of the Congo) and Liberia.
His only post outside of Africa was Economic Officer in the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates.
His assignments in Washington included Country Desk Officer for Nigeria and Diplomat-in- Residence at the Ralph J. Bunch International Affairs Center at Howard University. From 1997-99 McCallie served as Special Coordinator for the Africa Crisis Response Initiative, a presidential initiative designed to enhance peacekeeping capacity on the African continent. He worked with the Department of Defense toward peace-keeping training for African armies.
Ambassador McCallie’s final assignment in the Foreign Service was as Deputy Commandant for International Affairs at the United States Army War College where he co-taught courses in African affairs, military case studies and grand strategy. He also had oversight responsibility for the Army War College’s forty-two senior international officers each year.
Ambassador McCallie is the recipient of several superior honor awards from the Department of State and a presidential meritorious service award.
Marshall McCallie is a native of Chattanooga. He is an alumnus of McCallie School. He graduated with a degree in history from Vanderbilt University. He received a masters in international affairs at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
He served four years as electronic communications officer in the U.S. Air Force.
As an Air Force officer and Foreign Service officer, McCallie worked under eight Presidents from both parties (Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and G.W. Bush.)
He retired from the Foreign Service in 2002 and resides in Brevard, North Carolina, where he and his wife, Amye, are pursuing long-standing interests in natural history and hiking. They have two sons, Grady (Raleigh, N.C.) and Sumner (Chattanooga).
