March 2008 Update

Background - What is “Yad Sarah”?

Yad Sarah is one of Israel’s leading volunteer-staffed organizations, providing a spectrum of free or nominal cost home care support services.

Through over 100 branches across the country, Yad Sarah’s 6,000 volunteers help approximately 400,000 sick, disabled and elderly individuals annually, regardless of race, religion or nationality.

An independent survey found that one out of every two families in Israel has utilized Yad Sarah’s services at some time.

Yad Sarah saves the Israeli economy $320 million annually in hospitalization and long-term care costs, yet receives no ongoing government funding and exists primarily on private donations.

Background - The Chattanooga Connection

It is through Yad Sarah and the Givatayim Rotary that we have developed a kesher (connection) in Givatayim.

Bill Prince worked with the Rotary Club in Givatayim and our Downtown Rotary Club of Chattanooga.

The downtown Rotary Club provided the bulk of the financial support and the Givatayim Rotary along with Wheelchairs for Peace provided the logistics.

In December 2005 Ronni Charyn (Chattanooga Sister Cities VP for Givatayim) and Bill Prince (then President of Chattanooga Sister Cities) represented Sister Cities at the wheelchair dedication ceremony in Givatayim.  At this ceremony Bill delivered a presentation in Hebrew.

Do hope all is well with you and your loved ones.

Though it has been some time since we've been in touch, I wanted to share with you the impact of your Rotary Project in recent years.  The success of our wheelchair free loan program, in Givatayim and across Israel, as summarized in the attached report, is in large part thanks to your wonderful Chattanooga - Givatayim Rotary project.

It is an honor and a pleasure for us to partner with you.

Fondly,
Daniel

Through the efforts of Avi Rabinovitch (formerly Israel's Head of International Municipal Relations) and the officers of the Sister City Association of Chattanooga, Giv'atayim and Chattanooga developed a paired relationship, the papers being signed in July of 1988. Giv'atayim is one of the smallest cities in Israel with 50,000 residents. Located a few miles east of Tel Aviv, one of Israel's largest and more modern cities, Giv'atayim could be considered a suburb of Tel Aviv.

There is little industry or commerce; most of the space is devoted to residential areas, schools, sports facilities, and youth clubs. Giv'atayim is an arts-minded city. It has youth choirs and orchestras, several of which have toured in the U.S. Chattanoogans who have recently visited have commented on the open and friendly atmosphere. A group of Chattanooga business people visited Giv'atayim in 2000, underscoring with that city's Deputy Mayor Wasserman that Chattanooga recognizes its sister city relationship and wishes survival, peace, and prosperity for Israel.
